South Africa Advances Plans to Decarbonize Shipping Sector

15 July 2025

In a workshop co-organized by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and South Africa, the country reaffirmed its goal of promoting decarbonization in the shipping sector, presenting its plans to implement key IMO regulations on shipping emissions. In this event, over 70 officials from government, industry, and civil society had discussions in four areas including alignment with the approved IMO Net-Zero Framework; fuel transitions and decarbonization technologies; workforce development and training; and financing the green transition.

In his keynote, Deputy Minister of Transport of South Africa Mkhuleko Hlengwa emphasized the need for real actions and the role of Africa in making real progress in this matter. IMO technical officer Camille Bourgeon stated that this workshop played a central role in linking IMO’s Net-Zero Framework with national strategies and enhancing coordination among stakeholders while presenting an overview of the Framework. At the conclusion of the workshop, delegates endorsed the adoption of priority actions such as governance, infrastructure, and workforce.

£30 Million to Decarbonise Shipping, Boost Careers and Deliver Growth across the UK

24 July 2025

The UK government will set up a fund of £30m and provide it for coastal communities as part of its plan to achieve decarbonization in the shipping sector, boost local economies, and become a leader in clean energy. It plans to allocate funds through the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition (CMDC), a multi-year R&D funding initiative. The companies awarded from the sixth round of CMDC will be given a share of funding to support the development of clean marine fuels and technologies, such as ammonia, hydrogen, methanol, solar, and electric. So far, through the previous rounds of this initiative, the UK government has provided almost £140m to 142 organizations to promote decarbonization in the shipping sector.

Ahead of his visit to the area that benefited from the previous rounds of CMDC, Maritime Minister of the UK Mike Kane expressed his expectations that this initiative would help boost green growth in the maritime sector down the road. In the meantime, the companies which received funds noted that through investments thanks to this financial support, they were able to contribute to promoting the green economy and decarbonization and creating jobs. They said that they hoped for the continuous success of the funding.
