Dubai Maritime Authority Enforces Safety Awareness Measures for Marine Rental Customers

Dubai Maritime Authority launched a new awareness initiative as part of the 2026 Marine Safety Campaign to raise awareness among marine craft users in the region and enhance compliance with safety standards. This aims to reduce marine risks and accidents while ensuring the safety of sea-goers engaged in various activities at sea. Dubai Maritime Authority and companies and establishments in Dubai’s marine sector collaborated to deliver messages on preventive practices to sea-goers through awareness videos produced by the Authority, with the aim of promoting a culture of safety across all marine activities. According to an official from Dubai Maritime Authority, this initiative reflects the Authority’s commitment to enhancing preventive awareness and promoting the highest standards of marine safety. He emphasized that compliance with safety requirements is a shared responsibility that requires cooperation among all parties. This can help protect lives as well as enhance sustainability in Dubai’s maritime sector. Dubai Maritime Authority continues to make efforts to develop guidance manuals and awareness materials to enhance the efficiency of regulating maritime activities and support Dubai’s aspirations for global leadership in this sector. In the meantime, as there are dozens of marinas and maritime facilities and thousands of registered marine crafts in Dubai, it is important to intensify awareness and preventive efforts to ensure the safety of sea users and participants in various marine activities.

IMO Urges Nations to Put Ocean Policies into Practice

To mark World Oceans Day on June 8, IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez urged Member States and the global shipping industry to reinforce the implementation of measures to protect the maritime environment. Mr. Dominguez emphasized that the shipping sector, as one of the main users of the ocean, should enhance the regulatory framework to reduce pollution and address new challenges, such as underwater radiated noise and transboundary species. Over the past decades, IMO has established a set of international instruments, such as the MARPOL Convention, Ballast Water Management Convention, and Anti-Fouling Systems Convention, in order to reduce pollution in the ocean, protect marine life, and support safer and more sustainable shipping. IMO adopted the 2026 Strategy and the Action Plan to Address Marine Plastic Litter from Ships, reaffirming its goal of zero plastic waste from ships by 2030. The organization also extended the trial phase for IMO’s revised Guidelines for the reduction of Underwater Radiated Noise to address its adverse impacts on marine life. In addition, Member States reached an agreement to develop an instrument for the control and management of ships’ biofouling to minimize the transfer of invasive aquatic species and protect biodiversity. There are also ongoing discussions on regulations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from ships.
